Flying’s a wonderful thing

IATA is really worried about climate change or, at least, that is what we could think when visiting its web page.

Aircraft noise, emissions policy options, Environmental Best Practice database, Environment Committee, Environment News, Fuel Efficiency, Local Air Quality, Sustainability…yes, it seems IATA and air companies are spending money and resources trying to be «greener».

Javier Gallego, Head of European Service Centre, said last January 16th in the «Air Transport in Spain 2008» conference (organised by IATA and the Spanish Ministry of Infrastructures and sponsored by Banesto) that «Aviation contributes 2% of global CO2 emissions. This is a figure that we are working hard to limit with new, fuel-efficient aircraft, shorter routes and better air traffic control.» And it seems that’s real, but people must know.

So, to communicate the progress that has been made and the challenges that remain, IATA, with the support of Airbus, The Boeing Company, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce, have produced a set of advertisements to be published in in-flight magazines and displayed in airports. Take a look at the video campaign (it reminds me some scenes of «Love Actually» film…).

In addition, you can check www.enviro.aero . This website is an initiative of the commercial aviation industry to explain the truth of climate change and aviation’s impact on the environment.

In brief, aircraft companies are doing a good job trying to be more sustainable and that is good for all of us, even for the finances since a more sustainable company saves an impressive amount of money and resources.

I would like to thank IATA for the invitation to attend this conference. Well organised and excellent speakers.
